Manchester United are in with a sporting chance of scoring a £70m kit sponsorship deal after a bidding war ignited between sportswear brands Adidas, Warrior and Puma for the high-profile rights.

Nike’s current £23.5m a year sponsorship deal expires next year prompting its rivals to muscle in on one of the most high-profile sponsorship opportunities in sport.

It would be way more than double the £30m a year secured by Arsenal when they agreed to a Puma sponsorship deal on Monday and would be the largest in footballing history of it goes ahead.

Adidas is currently the favourite to win the deal and is the present sponsor of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Despite struggling in the league Manchester United’s cachet has been bolstered by the signing of Juan Mata who is already boosting sales.
