Celtic manager Neil Lennon is suing News Group Newspapers over claims that the now defunct News of the World hacked his phone in 2003.

Proceedings: Neil Lennon's lawyers have lodged a petition

According to the Daily Record, papers were lodged at the Court of Session in Edinburgh on Thursday over claims that Lennon's voicemail messages were illegally intercepted by convicted phone-hacker Glenn Mulcaire.

A petition lodged by Lennon’s lawyers stated: “The petitioner (Mr Lennon) intends to commence proceedings against the respondent in this court seeking damages for the illegal interception of his voicemail messages.”

The petition also states that Lennon’s address and phone number has been found in an entry in Mulcaire’s notebook along with information of a personal nature.

News Group has previously settled with a number of celebrities who had their phones hacked, including actress Sienna Miller for a sum of £100,000 and singer Charlotte Church for £600,000.

In the US, an Angelina Jolie stunt double began proceedings in June last year over claims that her phone had been hacked by the News of the World.
