A Twitter storm has erupted over the unconventional sanitary standards at a Winter Olympics venue in Sochi, Russia, after a photo of the facilities went viral on the social network. The BBC’s Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg was touring the facility when he stumbled upon a twin male toilet cubicle, replete with two flush toilets sitting side by side – with barely sufficient room to squeeze a toilet roll between them.It prompted Rosenberg to remark: “Seeing double in the Gentlemen's Loo at the Olympic Biathlon Centre.”

The comment was soon picked up by opposition leader Alexei Navalny who questioned why, far from spending a penny on its sanitary facilities, Russia has embarked on a lavish spending spree, throwing some £30bn on the Games.Navalny retweeted the snap along with the comment: “This is a men's toilet in a Sochi Olympics media centre for 1.5bn roubles [£27m; $45m]."Other Russians saw the funny side of the story however, equating it to Russia’s controversial clampdown on 'gay propaganda'.
