The Cloud has announced that there was 114 per cent increase in tablet devices accessing The Cloud on 8 January 2014, compared with the same day in 2013, while 39 million tablet-minutes were spent on public Wi-Fi in first week of 2014.

The research found that there was a 307 per cent increase in Android tablets accessing the network compared with the previous year, while use of iOS tablets increased by 106 per cent.

Vince Russell, managing director at The Cloud, said: “What’s stood out in the first few weeks of 2014 is the rise in Android tablets using our Wi-Fi compared with this time last year. To us, this highlights the rise of the tablet industry which was once all about the iPad, but other devices have now made their mark.

“The figures also show how we are becoming more tablet-obsessed as a nation. Since the start of 2014, the UK has spent over 39 million tablet-based minutes online. With everything from online banking to retail and healthcare being increasingly tablet-based, we expect usage to grow even more over the next 12 months.”

The Wi-Fi network provider also reported an increase in use over the Christmas sale period itself, with 8.4 million Wi-Fi sessions connecting between 27 December and 31 December, with the majority of these coming from shopping centres.

The latest issue of The Drum has a mobile focus, including the role tablets are playing in a new wave of media consumption.
