American Express (Amex) has appointed Arena Media, part of Havas, to handle its consolidated global paid search account after a three way pitch, The Drum understands.

The account, which is valued at £5m per year, will cover the UK, as well as some other markets including Canada, Japan and Australia.

The consolidated account will see Arena handle all the paid search for Amex: previously local suppliers have been used in some markets, as well as the incumbent agency.

MindShare was the main incumbent agency, having held the account since 1998. It is yet to be confirmed whether MindShare will continue to hold the US account, which The Drum understands has not been affected by the pitch process.

Sources close to the situation have told The Drum that the three way pitch was between Arena, MindShare and iProspect.

Amex was unavailable for comment at the time of this article's publication.
