BBC talent show The Voice has been given a ratings boost courtesy of Kylie Minogue with the Australian singer’s debut drawing an average audience of 8.4m – 2m higher than last year.

The season three opener was well ahead of season two’s premier, which achieved an average share of just 6.2m and was enough to easily see off competition from ITV’s Splash!, which managed just 3.7m viewers.

Minogue joined a number of fresh faces in the judging panel, including Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson and The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue.

Veteran crooner Tom Jones and American star Will.i.am joined Minogue on the set, the latter of whom personally convinced Minogue to take part after jetting out to the US.
