The Walt Disney Company has elected Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey to its board of directors as an independent director.

Dorsey, chairman of Twitter and CEO of commerce company Square, was described by Robert Iger, chairman and CEO of Disney as “a talented entrepreneur” as he welcomed him to the board.

"The perspective he brings to Disney and its Board is extremely valuable, given our strategic priorities, which include utilizing the latest technologies and platforms to reach more people and to enhance the relationship we have with our customers,” continued Iger.

Dorsey added: "I am honoured and humbled to join the Disney Board…Disney is a timeless company, one we all grow up learning from and admiring."

Dorsey will now stand for election, alongside the rest of the board, at its annual general meeting on 18 March, while Judith L. Estrin, a former executive at Cisco Systems and CEO of JLabs, will depart after 15 years.
