Hammersmith and Fulham Council has sent out Christmas cards as part of a ‘hard-hitting campaign’, which warn council tenants to pay their rent over the holiday months.

The card, which shows a pound coin fizzing in a glass of water, states: "Don't overindulge this Christmas. Pay your rent!"

A councillor from the district told the BBC that the card had been sent to 17,000 properties, and that the £2,000 it cost to produce "pales into insignificance" against the rent owed.

However, some tenants have described the campaign as a “disgusting, threatening piece of literature masquerading as a Christmas greeting”.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council said 46 per cent of its tenants were in rent arrears.
