Talks held between the Ministers’ Justice and Home Affairs Council regarding the draft European Union’s (EU) Data Protection Regulation revisions, failed to reach a conclusion last week (6 December) granting UK businesses “breathing space”, according to the Direct Marketing Association (DMA).

Commenting on the latest developments DMA executive director Chris Combemale, said: “UK companies eager for good news from Brussels on the draft EU Data Protection Regulation have been granted a further three months to ensure UK Government representatives continue to push for a fair and business-friendly Regulation.

“Following the failure of the Ministers’ Justice and Home Affairs Council to reach agreement in their meeting at the end of last week, UK businesses must now wait until early March 2014 until the meeting of EU justice ministers for the next round of important discussions.

“The outcome of this meeting will likely determine when the DPR becomes adopted and implemented into law.

“While there is a possible delay to the process, the battle is far from over. The DMA will continue to remain at the forefront of the industry’s campaign to lobby UK Government representatives and EU lawmakers for a fair and balanced regulation.”

The aim of the reform of data protection law is to streamline the law across Europe and update it to address today’s digital landscape and increased collection and exchange of data.

However, the European Commission’s early proposals have caused major concern among industry bodies, who see it as a threat to the viability of data-driven advertising and its role in helping to fund online content and services.

To understand more about the full impact of the reforms and what it means for businesses read IAB’s head of regulatory affairs Nick Stringer's column, written for The Drum.
