Costa Coffee has moved to ban Cliff Richard’s seasonal hit Mistletoe and Wine from its 1,600 outlets after the crooner’s soliloquy to Christmas was voted the most hated festive song of all time.

Richard track topped the charts for all the wrong reasons after the coffee chain found that the track was more likely to make its customers ears bleed and make for the exits rather than linger inside.

Richards was pipped to the post in the unwelcome poll of 3,000 Britons by fellow Christmas stalwarts in the form of Sir Paul McCartney, Shakin’ Stevens and Band Aid 20 – although these will escape a ban.

Commenting on the move to expunge Mistletoe and Wine from in-store playlists Costa’s marketing director Kevin Hydes explained: “the festive happiness of our customers and staff is our utmost priority.”

The chain will also donate £10k to Youth Music in a bid to stimulate young people to produce fresh twists on classics such as Bing Crosby’s White Christmas and Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday.
