RBS blames cyber-attack as NatWest website goes down for second time in a week
The Royal Bank of Scotland has blamed a DDoS cyber-attack for the outage of its NatWest service earlier today.
In a statement, the bank said: "Due to a surge in internet traffic deliberately directed at the NatWest website, customers experienced difficulties accessing some of our customer web sites today.
"This deliberate surge of traffic is commonly known as a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. We have taken the appropriate action to restore the affected websites."
This comes just days after the banks faced a series of glitches that stopped customers from making payments on Cyber Monday.
RBS said that today’s attack was in no way related to what happened on Monday, and added that no customer was at risk from the attack.
