To promote the importance of giving blood during the Christmas period, a series of Santas have queued up outside the West End donor centre just off Oxford Street in London, before coming out with white suits.

The campaign shows the Santas exiting the building drained of the red from the famous suit, to raise awareness of the fact that winter is one of the worst times for blood shortages.

NHS Blood and Transplant has already unveiled a TV and radio ad this winter, urging the public to donate blood and platelets.

Jon Latham, assistant director at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “While people are in a generous frame of mind, we’re asking that they don’t forget those whose must-have gift is blood or platelets. Donating doesn’t cost a penny and saves lives, meaning many more children and adults can spend precious time with their families over Christmas.”

A unit of blood has a shelf life of 35 days.
