In true Glasgow humour, the news of plans aimed at preventing the traditional placing of a traffic cone on the Duke of Wellington statue in the city centre have been met with the immediate creation of a campaign to save the Glasgow cone.Within hours of the proposals by Glasgow City Council to raise the size of the plinth that the monument sits on being unveiled, the @WellingtonCone Twitter account burst into life and gained the backing of Scots comedians such as Greg Hemphill, as well as politicians and members of the public. The hashtag #conegate quickly began trending in Glasgow.A petition has now been launched in aid of the cone, which was voted in the top 10 sites-to-see in Scotland by Lonely Planet.
