Free tabloid newspaper The Metro has been named as the publication of the year at the annual Stonewall Awards.

The Metro publishes 1.3 million copies per day

The awards celebrate “the outstanding contribution of individuals and groups towards equality over the past year.”

The Metro is distributed free on buses, trains and subway networks in cities across the UK. It is funded entirely from advertising.

Reporting on its win, the Metro said: “Judges at the ceremony, held at London’s V&A museum, praised Metro for its ‘frequent and incidental coverage of gay issues’.”

It added: “Watched on by sports stars, politicians and celebrities, organisers said in 2013 Metro was ‘a must-read for millions of commuters across Britain, for its balanced and extensive coverage of important issues such as equal marriage and homophobia in football’.

Metro editor Kenny Campbell said: ‘Everyone at Metro is so pleased to be recognised with this award but we also look forward to a time when the LGBT community doesn’t have to campaign to be treated equally across society.”

1.3 million copies of the Metro are distributed each day in the UK.
