The UK Government has released details of a scheme to introduce a fleet of 20 driverless cars to the town of Milton Keynes.

The cars will be on the road within two years

The cars will be available for hire on the one mile route between the train station and shopping centre, with journeys bookable via smartphone app.

The cars will travel at 12mph, and journeys are being priced at £2.00. The vehicles will run on dedicated lanes isolated from normal traffic.

Jon Beasley, programme director from the Transport Systems Catapult told Sky News why the cars would only ferry people to a single destination.

“People basically come into MK on the train and they want to go to the city centre, or there is a very large office community around the train station and they may actually during the day want to go into the city centre for a short period and come back,” he said.

"Basically it gives them the option to get to the city centre comfortably, safely, they can continue processing and doing work, reading emails, reading papers whilst they go to the city centre itself."

The cars are reported to use GPS, high definition cameras and sensors to navigate.
