Facebook has begun rolling out the biggest overhaul of its like and share buttons since their conception in 2010 with a new design intended to bolster their effectiveness.

Both blue buttons are presently viewed over 22bn times a day from 7.5m websites and in an effort to increase these formidable stats will also be making it possible to incorporate like and share buttons side by side with options to display them in multiple styles.

Like allows people to post links back to Facebook with a single click whilst share enables users to add a message and specify an audience prior to sharing.

Commenting on the new system Huffington Post's head of product Nico Pitney, said:"We place the Like and Share buttons right below the headline of our articles and in a persistent left side bar that stays with the user when they scroll down the page. We want to give people every opportunity to like and share content, and, at this point, I like to think we've made it hard not to engage in social actions."

Individual Facebook users will receive the new look buttons automatically over the coming weeks.
