Marilyn Monroe has become the latest deceased celebrity to be resurrected for a high profile ad campaign, after her brand rights were sold in 2011.

She follows Audrey Hepburn, Bruce Lee and Gene Kelly, all of whose images were adapted for commercial use by Cadbury’s, Johnnie Walker and Volkswagen, respectively.

The Monroe campaign is for Chanel No 5, a product Monroe famously endorsed during her lifetime. The campaign utilises only archive footage and a recording of Monroe’s own voice, explaining to an interviewer why she told reporters that she wore Chanel No 5 in bed.

The recording comes from an interview given to Marie Claire journalist Georges Belmont in 1960 which was only discovered last year.

Chanel’s last campaign featuring a monologue by Brad Pitt was widely ridiculed.
