Ebay has apologised after it emerged the online auction site was hosting Nazi memorabilia from the Holocaust.

An investigation from the Mail On Sunday revealed a number of items on the site, including a uniform being advertised as having belonged to a Polish baker who died at Auschwitz. The item was on sale for $18,000 (£11,200).

Other items on sale included Star of David armbands, which Jews were forced to wear under the Nazis, a woman’s uniform and toothbrushes said to have been used by Auschwitz victims.

Ebay quickly apologised after the Mail on Sunday investigation and said it had removed 30 items from the site.

A spokesman said: “We are very sorry these items have been listed on eBay and we are removing them.

“We don’t allow listings of this nature, and dedicate thousands of staff to policing our site and use the latest technology to detect items that shouldn’t be for sale. We very much regret that we didn’t live up to our own standards.”

The auction site also said it would make a $40,000 (£25,000) donation to charity.
