Chinese major Wang Hun has suffered a PR setback in plans to get in touch with the people, as a photo of him and colleagues visiting a parishioner was doctored to shrink the woman, making Wang’s legs disappear.

The photo was doctored by Wang’s staff, and shows the quartet towering over the shrunken body of the 103-year-old pensioner, while vice-mayor of Ningguo Wang is made to seem like a ghostly legless figure.

The picture then appeared on the local government website alongside a caption that encouraged Chinese citizens to feel “the warmth of the party and the government”.

Xinhua, China’s official news agency, has reported that those appropriate for the bungled photo had been ‘punished’, following ridicule. Publicists insist that the visit did take place, but that two images had to be ‘merged’ in order to fit everyone into the same frame.
