Supermarket brand Coles has said that it is “open” to the idea of creating Australian-only aisles in its stores to promote home grown products.

The brand is 'open' the the new idea

Cattle farmer Kathy Dudley has called on supermarkets to have designated Australian-only aisles to generate an ''absolutely huge'' boost in sales of locally grown or made goods, protect local jobs and stimulate the economy, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

She argued that ‘weak’ labelling laws had resulted in a confusing designation of country-of-origin labels on.

A Coles spokesperson said the supermarket brand was ''open to new ideas''.

The Drum has contacted Coles and requested a full statement on its position.

Independent brand and businessman Dick Smith said: 'It would only happen if it was legislated and no politician, I think, would be game to legislate because they would be offending foreign companies that employ huge numbers of Australians.”

Supermarket brand Woolworths said its research showed that 'customers like to shop by food or product category, rather than country of origin.
