Global's Capital Network becomes the UK's top commercial radio brand with 7.7m listeners in Q3 2013 Rajars

Rajar figures for Q3 2013 show Bauer Radio reaches 14.3 million listeners with its Passion Portfolio recording its highest-ever reach, Global’s Capital Network was revealed as the UK’s number on commercial radio brand with 7.7 million listeners.

Real and Smooth Radio Limited recorded over 5.9 million listeners each week, accounting for 47.3 million adult listening hours, an increase of 1.2 million on the quarter. Total Real Radio UK is attracting over 2.5 million adult listeners, with reach uplift for both Real Radio Wales and Real Radio Scotland – 37,000 year-on-year and 85,000 quarter-on-quarter respectively.

Mark Lee, chief executive of Real and Smooth Limited said he was “delighted with the outstanding set of figures this quarter has produced,” adding: “It’s a wonderful achievement to have just under six million adult listeners tuning in each week to a Real or Smooth Station and it’s a great result for the team in Wales scoring their highest reach.”

Bauer’s Passion Portfolio’s reported reach of 7.6 million and increased its share and hours by 18.4 per cent and 17.2 per cent year-on-year. Nationally Kiss recorded listener figures of over 5.1 million adults and was also up in terms of share and hours. Planet Rock listener figures grew 9.6 per cent year-on-year with heat radio listeners up 11.3 per cent year-on-year.

Local programming through Bauer’s Place Portfolio saw reach of 8.6 million adults each week, in London Magic 105.4 reaches 1.97 million listeners per week . In Scotland Capital was revealed to be the commercial market leader on reach with 579,000 tuning in, 6,000 ahead of Bauer's Clyde1. Real Radio Scotland is the leader on hours and share with 5,155,000 hours per week, 23,000 ahead of the nearest competitor.

Commenting on the results Dee Ford, group managing director, Bauer Radio, called the results a “Wow moment for the radio team at Bauer Media as it records its highest ever reach”.

The Capital Network recorded 865,000 new listeners in the past year, reaching an audience of 7.7 million listeners making it the UK’s number one commercial station. In London 95.8 Capital FM recorded 2.2 million weekly listeners with 171,000 new listeners in the past year.

Ashley Tabor, founder and executive president at Global, called Capital’s figures a “huge achievement” and said the results were “testament to the investment made in our station and shows and the hard work of the team at Global”.

Overall Global achieved its highest reach, with 20.4 million listeners across its eight brands. The Heart network made notable gains around the UK including Heart West Midlands, Essex and Kent. LBC 97.3 achieved national reach of 1.3 million listeners and London reach of 1.1 million listeners.

Global group executive director and director of broadcasting Richard Park added: “We are hugely delighted that our programming strategy and our engagement with listeners is yielding such impressive results.”
