Miley Cyrus has over taken Swedish games channel PewDiePie to be crowned Youtube’s most popular channel after the US pop star racked up more than 270.1m views through September.

The stellar figure represents a 222 per cent increase on August and follows a controversial a number of controversial stunts pulled off by the singer, famed for her twerking and hammer licking, and dovetails with the release of her Wrecking Ball single.

This was more than enough to see off competition from Swedish gamer Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, who notched up 215.6m views over the same period – although, at 14.3m, he retains far more subscribers than Cyrus who has just 2.9m.

Compiled by Tubefilter for its monthly Top 100 chart once again illustrates the dominance of music channels with four in five of the most popular channels stemming from the genre in September; including Turkish channel Mu-Yap (179m views) and official channels for Katy Perry (162.1m) and Avicii (105m).

This dominance is reflected by the performance of music video service Vevo, which hosted 22 of the 100 most popular YouTube channels in September.
