Managing editor of Time magazine, Richard Stengel, has announced his departure from the publication to take on a role within the Obama administration.

Stengel, who has served as managing editor since 2006, has been appointed as under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs at the State Department, according to New York Times sources.

While working as a writer for Time he covered the 1988 and 1996 presidential campaigns.

Stengel has said that Time deputy editor, Nancy Gibbs, would succeed him, but this has not yet been confirmed by the magazine.
