Guide Dogs UK launched the “Stand Out, Go Walkies” campaign, a series of sponsored walks across the country where the dogs and not the owners are sponsored, last night in London.

The charity - which was founded in 1934 - kicked-off the campaign to highlight the difficulties that the blind and partially sighted have living independent lives. Guide Dogs UK requested the public to ‘stand out’ in high visibility yellow - the colour of the guide dog harness.

The event was hosted by Angela Begley, winner of the Voice and featured an EDF Energy London Eye bathed in neon yellow.

Richard Leaman, CEO of Guide Dogs, said: “Guide Dogs Week this year is our biggest and most ambitious yet. We want the public to join in and stand out for guide fogs to help fundraise for this vital charitable work.

“Nearly two million people in Britain are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives, and Guide Dogs is here to help them to get out and about, and to enjoy the quality of life they want, and deserve.”

Throughout the month ‘Team Guide Dog’ will visit Britain’s most iconic landmarks such as the Angel of the North, Birmingham’s Bullring and the Clifton Suspension Bridge as well as a meeting with the cast of musical Wicked and an encounter a Dalek at the Dr Who Experience.

The public will be able to follow the journey and donate via a live feed online.
