Struggling Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC has been dealt a fresh blow following the arrest of three design executives on suspicion of leaking trade secrets.

Prosecutors have arrested Thomas Chien, vice president of product design; Wu Chien Hung, research and development director and Justin Huang, senior manager of design and innovation with Chien and Chien Hung presently under custody and Huang released on bail.

In addition to charges of leaking trade secrets the trio are also accused of making false commission fee claims totalling around £216k and come in the wake of a formal complaint filed by HTC last month.

In a prepared statement HTC commented: “The company expects employees to observe and practise the highest levels of integrity and ethics. Protecting the company’s proprietary and intellectual properties, privacy and security is a core fundamental responsibility of every employee.

“The company does not compromise nor condone any violation at any level of our organisation and the company shall act in accordance to the law.

“The company has sufficient resources in our design team and this situation will not impact the company’s operations, product portfolio plans and our overall business performance.”
