Android VP Hugo Barra to leave Google for new role at Xiaomi

Hugo Barra vice president of Android at Google has announced he is leaving the company after five years.

Barra is now set to take up a new role at Chinese phone maker Xiaomi within the next few weeks working as vice president of Xiaomi Global.

In his resignation statement Barra praised his team and confirmed that his new role will still see him working with Android.

“After nearly five and a half years at Google and almost three years as a member of the Android team - the most amazing group of people I've ever worked with in my life - I have decided to start a new career chapter.

“I'm really looking forward to this new challenge, and am particularly excited about the opportunity to continue to help drive the Android ecosystem.”

Google responded to Barra’s resignation wishing him “the best” and adding “we’ll miss him at Google and we're excited that he is staying within the Android ecosystem.”
