Groupon sacks sales rep who threatened restaurant owner with bad Yelp reviews

Groupon has fired a sales rep who sent a threatening email to a restaurant owner after he hung up on his cold call.

Andrew Johnson has worked with Groupon for little over a year, but after Sauce-owner Trip Hosely dismissed his sales pitch he followed up with an email that appeared to suggest his “huge network of friends” would be informed of how Johnson was treated.

Although the email, which was subsequently posted on Facebook by Hosely, doesn’t state bad reviews would be written outright, the undertone was threatening enough to warrant Johnson’s immediate dismissal from the daily deals company.

It read:

"Hi Trip!

I sincerely appreciate you hanging up on me. As a resident of San Francisco for over 25 years, I have a huge network of friends (ages 25-40) that all are extremely active on Yelp as well as other social media. I will gladly let them know how you treated me as well as my feelings about the people who run Sauce.

Go Giants!


Speaking to All Things D, a Groupon spokesperson said: “All indications are that this was an isolated incident. There’s already a great deal of training that takes place.”
