China’s official state mouthpiece, Xinhua, has seen its reputation for accuracy sink to a new low after it reprinted a satirical report that Amazon founder Jeff Bozos had inadvertently purchased The Washington Post by mistakenly clicking on a link.

The tongue in cheek piece, written by Andy Borowitz for The New Yorker, went above the heads of the straight laced reporters at China’s official news agency, who reported the piece as fact despite it being patently ridiculous.

Amongst the claims made in the article were that the £162m deal had been a ‘gigantic mix up’ which had seen Bozos frantically calling the Washington Post’s customer service team to obtain a refund.

Falling for this tale not once but thrice the piece appeared on the website of China Radio International, the People’s Daily and on Xinhua.
