Facebook has hired Gary Briggs in the newly created role of chief marketing officer.

Briggs has been tasked with leading Facebook’s marketing and branding efforts, according to AdAge, and will oversee the Facebook teams responsible for product marketing, platform marketing and events, communication design, brand marketing and content strategy.

Briggs was formerly the marketing chief at Motorola Mobility following its $12.5bn takeover by Google. Prior to that he was Google’s vice president of consumer marketing and has also served in marketing roles for PepsiCo and eBay.

"Facebook isn't just a company. For more than a billion people, it's their connection to the friends and things they care about most," Briggs said in a statement. "Telling the story of such an important and still very young brand is an incredible opportunity, and I cannot wait to get started."

Effective September, he replaces Eric Antonow, VP of product marketing, who has led Facebook's marketing efforts since 2010. Antonow is leaving Facebook after the transition period to pursue other projects.

Briggs will report to Chris Cox, vice president of product.
