Fox Studios confirms three sequels to 3D film Avatar will be filmed simultaneously next year
James Cameron's 2009 3D epic Avatar will have three sequels, Fox Studios has revealed.
The three films, which will be filmed back-to-back next year, will be released in December 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively.
According to Cameron, the two sequels he proposed in 2010 "would not be enough".
Commenting: "In writing the new films, I've come to realise that Avatar's world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated. It became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen."
Four screenwriters, including War of the Worlds writer Josh Friedman and Armageddon scriptwriter Shane Salerno, have been hired to assist Cameron in writing the follow-ups to the highest grossing film of all time.
