Apple and Amazon have come to an agreement over the rights to use the ‘app store’ name.

Both companies can now use the phrase, after the case, which was initiated in 2011, was dismissed in California today, 9 July.

At the time, Apple claimed Amazon had misused the ‘app store’ name to attract developers, while Amazon maintained that ‘app store’ was too generic a name to be characterised as false advertising.

However, Apple has now guaranteed Amazon it will not sue, eliminating the possibility of a counterclaim from the online retailer.

Kristin Huguet, Apple spokeswoman, said: “We no longer see a need to pursue our case. With more than 900,000 apps and 50 billion downloads, customers know where they can purchase their favourite apps.”
