John Donnelly, former commercial director at Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, has been appointed as CEO of Marketing Edinburgh.

Donnelly, who resigned from the Games organiser last year, has spent recent months running his own consultancy, but has now taken on the the role f heading up the Edinburgh tourism body. .

The appointment of Donnelly will end a period of uncertainty following the resignation of Lucy Bird at the end of last year, stemming from the controversy that surrounded the Incrediburgh campaign commissioned by Marketing Edinburgh.

On Incredinburgh, Donnelly said: “Everyone has an opinion when it comes to creative work. Incredinburgh was certainly a bold campaign. Of course, there were learnings that Marketing Edinburgh had to take on board but I believe we must not be afraid to give Edinburgh the promotion it deserves; marketing that’s imaginative, clever and, above all else, innovative.”

He joins following the appointment of former Heineken and Kelloggs marketer, Nick Hudson as head of marketing and Sue Stuart as director of operations
