The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has launched a hunt for a new communications director following a string of negative headlines during a recent Middle East visit.

This elicited fury from Palestinians after he had ignored invitations to visit Bethlehem or Nazareth during the high profile visit.

An official from the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem complained: “We weren’t given any notice of his schedule and were treated like criminals by his staff when we asked if he would like to visit our most holy sites.”

In response Welby, who uses blogs and Twitter, is looking to recruit a PR advisor to serve him at Lambeth Palace and forestall any such issues from arising in future.

Lambeth Palace’s current press secretary, Marie Papworth, is shortly due to go on maternity leave.
