Head of social media at Asda Dom Burch will discuss brands in a virtual world and how to keep brand experience consistent in the social age at The Drum Live event in London next month.

The Drum Live: Asda's Dom Burch is gearing up to take part

At the Social Media World Forum in London earlier this year, Burch told an audience that websites were dead and mobile-centric content strategies must form the core of online marketing and brand development.

He said: "For us, everything is mobile-first from a content perspective. If it doesn't work on mobile - go home. If the video doesn't load, the content doesn't look right or the photos are too big, if I can't see it on my mobile devices it's a waste of time."

Burch went on to say social media had become a new form of PR and flipped the traditional status quo on its head and said fan engagement should be a priority for brands rather than gaining followers or page likes.

Burch has worked across the board, ranging from Saatchi & Saatchi in the late 1990s to Green Flag, the Royal Bank of Scotland and Direct line.

Originally a PR manager at Asda when he joined the company in 2002, Burch moved up to head of corporate communications in 2008 prior to his appointment as head of PR in 2012.

Burch's latest position as head of social media makes him responsible for managing Walmart's UK social media strategy.

At The Drum Live - where an industry audience joins The Drum editorial team for a day to produce an edition of the magazine live - Burch will discuss how brands can keep consumers engaged using social media tools and techniques with The Drum's news editor Stephen Lepitak.

Other industry names taking part in the event include vice president, corporate communications - digital at Visa Europe, Nick Jones; founder of Myshowcase.com Nancy Cruickshank; VP advertising sales at Shazam, Miles Lewis; controller of commercial digital products at ITV, John Block; marketing director at Play.com Adam Stewart; and chief envisioning officer at Microsoft UK, Dave Coplin.
