Google has mounted a legal challenge against a gagging order from America’s National Security Agency which prevents it from disclosing the number of data requests it receives from the spy agency.

The search giant claims that it has a First Amendment right to inform the public about such goings on and is being seen as a PR exercise to rebuild public trust in the farm following fall-out from the affair.

Publication of such data would reveal the extent of activities by the US intelligence communities but Google would not reveal how that data was being used.

In its motion the tech firm said: “Google's reputation and business has been harmed by the false or misleading reports in the media, and Google's users are concerned by the allegations.

“Google must respond to such claims with more than generalities.”
