Only a little late to the party, Facebook has today, 12 June, introduced hashtags to allow users to find out what’s happening around them.

In a blog post, Facebook said: “During primetime television alone, there are between 88 and 100 million Americans engaged on Facebook - roughly a Super Bowl-sized audience every single night, ” before citing a host of similar facts and figures about engagement with popular events.

“To date,” it continued, “there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what's happening or what people are talking about.

“To bring these conversations more to the forefront, we will be rolling out a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people, and topics. As a first step, we are beginning to roll out hashtags on Facebook.”

Similar to Instagram, Tumblr, or Pinterest, who were quick to follow Twitter in the hashtagging system, Facebook will allow you to add context to a post or indicate that it is part of a larger discussion. When you click on a hashtag in Facebook, you'll see a feed of what other people and Pages are saying about that event or topic.

You can search for a specific hashtag from your search bar, click on hashtags that originate on other services, such as Instagram and compose posts directly from the hashtag feed and search results.

Facebook’s announcement ended: “Hashtags are just the first step.

“We'll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world's conversations.”
