Scotsman editor Ian Stewart has launched a ‘Friends of The Scotsman’ initiative, allowing organisations – including charities, universities, trade associations, professional bodies – to contribute to a new editorial section.

Political groups, companies and individuals have been excluded from joining; however those eligible will receive a discounted subscription package and can decide the topics and set the agendas, using their own words.

According to Stewart, the submitted articles will appear "close to our perspective, letters and business sections" with a daily front page signpost and will also be published online.

Stewart published an open letter announcing the scheme. He said it is “an exciting innovation for The Scotsman that will open up new channels of information and debate across Scotland and beyond, highlighting work and issues that currently struggle to get heard."

If successful Stewart said he can see The Scotsman publishing an extra four pages a day for the new section.
