Mother New York launched a new charitable social interactive experience, Repair the Rockaways, at Internet Week 2013.

Repair the Rockaways acts as a fundraiser for ongoing repairs and restoration in Rockaway, New York, following Hurricane Sandy.

Established by employees at the Mother New York office who were affected by the hurricane, the initiative translates online activity into charitable donations through a digital interface as people who visit the dedicated website donate money in exchange for “bricks” to help construct houses in an environment modeled after the Rockaways. $10 buys 20 bricks, and 400 bricks build a virtual house.

The monetary contributions are directly donated to Respond and Rebuild, a volunteer group established in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, who can then supply Rockaway with supplies, education and labour to help rebuild the town.

So far nearly $2,000 has been raised towards the $250,000 target.
