Apple has updated its website with a countdown to 50 billion app downloads, as well as launching a competition offering a $10,000 App Store Gift Card to the user who downloads an app on the milestone.

The 50 billion mark comes just five moths after Apple announced the App Store had crossed 40 billion downloads, meaning it has managed to amass 10 billion downloads between January and May.

Apple has also published a list of the all-time most popular apps, with Rovio’s Angry Birds and Bad Piggies proving to be the most popular games apps. However, Zynga appeared a couple of times in the list thanks to Draw Something and Words with Friends.

Facebook’s app is the most popular free app on iPhone, while Instagram was named the third most popular free app.

WhatsApp was the 6th most popular download, while Twitter was named 8th.
