The Guardian’s Twitter account hijacked by Syrian regime elements
The Guardian has become the latest high-profile hacking victim after its Twitter account was hijacked by a pro-Syrian government militia called the Syrian Electronic Army.
Amongst the accounts affected were @GuardianBooks, @GuardianTravel and @GuardianFilm after a series of fake emails were issued to staff at the weekend asking them to click on malicious links.
A spokesman for Guardian News and Media said: “We are aware that a number of Guardian Twitter accounts have been compromised and we are working actively to resolve this."
The social media outlets of international media sites have become easy pickings for various factions in a PR war being waged on the internet in tandem with the constant street battles in Syria itself between its well armed government and an increasingly rebellious populace.
