Digital project unearths unseen World War 1 photograph of State Premier Thomas Playford

Adelaide State Library’s project to digitise its World War 1 photographs has uncovered a previously unknown picture of South Australia’s longest serving Premier, Thomas Playford.

The find was uncovered by State Library archivist Jenny Scott.

She had been trawling through the archive of thousands of glass plate negatives, which were to be scanned, digitised and uploaded online through Flickr.Playford serves as State Premier from 1938 to 1965.Ms Scott said she was able to identify him from additional information accompanying the archived photo. He was aged 18 when the picture was taken, in 1915.
