Budding amateur detectives have taken to the web in a bid to assist the FBI in tracking down the Boston bomber by trawling through hundreds of images of the event to try and spot anything suspicious.

Reddit and 4chan members have united under the FINDBOSTONBOMBER subreddit to take matters into their own hands, singling out individuals not paying attention to the race or with bulging backpacks.

Though well-meaning all the leads are pure speculation as none of the people identified on the forums may have anything to do with the bombing and not admissible as viable evidence.

It follows reports from America that the FBI has now identified a potential suspect in the case following an excruciating trawl of hours of CCTV footage, although the individual has not yet been named.

Government officials are urging anyone with photographs or video footage of the Boston marathon to turn in any material in the hope of finding new leads.
