It has been discovered that 52 per cent of the Twitter followers held by Justin Bieber are fake or inactive, but social media analysis tool Socialbakers has insisted that the public should not read too much into this.

About 45 per cent of Bieber’s Twitter followers have fake or empty accounts, while another 7 per cent are inactive, it was found, with ‘fake’ being defined as accounts which have never tweeted, accounts who follow less than 50 people or have a low amount of followers.

However, Socialbakers insists that the news should not be taken out of proportion, and that it is perfectly natural for such a high-profile account to attract fake followers; and the singer still has over 17 million ‘real’ followers.

However, this does push Lady Gaga into the lead in the Twitter race, as she has 19 million ‘real’ followers.
