Incoming BBC director general Tony Hall will begin his stint as head of the BBC today, 12 years after departing the broadcaster to lead the Royal Opera House.

Hall’s inbox is already bulging with the mammoth clear-up task from the ongoing fallout over the Jimmy Savile scandal which instigated a wider crisis of confidence in the organisation.

The BBC is already braced for further sordid revelations of other employees accused of sexual abuse and recently weathered a journalists strike over redundancies and cutbacks.

First on Hall’s to-do list however will be to appoint a new director of news and director of television.
