Apple’s attempt to trademark its iPad Mini has been denied in the US, with the company’s application being described by the US Patent and Trademark Office as being ‘merely descriptive’.

The denial has been revealed within a letter, sent 24 January, which stated: “Registration is refused because the applied-for mark merely describes a feature or characteristic of applicant’s goods.”

It continued to explain: “A mark is merely descriptive if it describes an ingredient, quality, characteristic, function, feature, purpose, or use of an applicant’s goods and/or services.”

Apple still has until July to file the patent for its scaled-down version of the iPad, however.
