The BBC is to debut a new Peter Kay sitcom on iPlayer, the first time a newly commissioned show has been premiered entirely on the increasingly influential format.

Car Share sees Kay play the part of a supermarket worker forced into the passenger seat of a colleague to get to work as part of a company car-share scheme.

Stretching to half a dozen episodes of half an hour each the entire series will be shown online in its entirety before being aired on BBC One, part of a wider trial of 40 hours of content to provide a litmus test of popularity.

BBC One controller Danny Cohen said: "It is hugely exciting that Peter Kay is coming to BBC One with his new series - even more so with the innovative plan we have to launch the show online."

Commenting in the venture Kay added: “… the idea of two people car sharing to work each day really appealed to me, as it highlights the comedy in the minutia of the daily trek and allows the spiralling conversations of life to unwind in all of their glory."
