Facebook is considering introducing hashtag functionality into its social network, apeing the popularity of the device on Twitter for connecting related discussions.

According to reports in the Wall Street Journal Facebook plans to implement a variant of the service which will allow users to index conversations around a particular topic, although no release date has yet been set.

Facebook is said to be beavering away on the update just now and is considered by analysts to be a natural evolution of its Graph Search function which is presently limited by the information users input on their location, friends and likes.

Hashtag functionality would enable users to read public posts based around certain key words such as #Bieber.

Facebook owned Instagram already incorporates its own hashtag service.
