ITV has been forced to make a grovelling apology to the Royal Family after blundering producers on This Morning inadvertently aired an unblurred copy of controversial photographs depicting a pregnant Duchess of Cambridge in a bikini.

Describing the incident, which left presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford red faced as a ‘deeply regrettable error’ the broadcaster issued a statement outlining its version of events.

In it ITV said: “Unfortunately we accidentally showed an unblurred image of the magazine cover, which briefly showed the photographs. This was a deeply regrettable error and we are very sorry.”

The latest blunder comes just months after Philip Schofield waved a list of alleged paedophiles, discernible to viewers, in front of the Prime Minister.

Chi magazine, original publisher of the snaps, said in a statement of its own: “The photographs, which can in no way be considered scandalous, were bought from an international photo agency, do not harm the image of the protagonists and the reaction of the media seems to me wholly over the top.”
