Social media has been topping the list of the things people will be giving up for Lent this year.

Using Twitter’s API, OpenBible.com has so far looked at 148,380 tweets on the subject of Lent, with final results being revealed on February 15.

Thus far, ‘being pope’ has been the number 1 thing people will be giving up, reflecting the recent news on Pope Benedict XVI stepping down from the position.

In third place is a rather general Social Media, with over 1,500 people tweeting to say it is the vice they intend to give up.

Instagram has taken 11th place, out of the list of 100, with 379 people saying they will be taking a 40-day break from it, while Twitter is thus far 13th with 320 and counting apparently sending their last tweet today.

Facebook is so far down in 27th place while iPhone is in 68th.

The list, however, is expected to change. In 2012, the analysis looked at a series of 300,000 tweets over three days. That year Twitter came out on top, with Facebook (6th), Social Networking (23rd), and Tumblr (56th) the most mentioned social media sites.

Other, more obscure, things which have made it into the the list are Valentine's Day (22nd), My Girlfriend (95th) and Justin Beiber (100th).
