Exiled British journalist and TV presenter Piers Morgan has been granted a presidential pardon from deportation by no less than President Obama himself after 100,000 Americans signed a petition to have him flung out of their country.

Obama’s official spokesman was forced to respond after the White House committed itself to respond to any petition garnering in excess of 25,000 signatures a month, a figure which Morgan readily smashed.

Joe Carney said: “Americans may disagree on matters of public policy and express those disagreements vigorously, but no one should be punished by the government simply because he or she expressed a view.”

The news was welcomed by Morgan who tweeted: ““Thanks for keeping me, Mr President. Much appreciated.”

Morgan was given a ratings boost recently after stirring the hornets’ nest of US gun control, getting into an on air showdown with Texan conspiracy theorist Alex Jones which went viral.
